Nora makes a sweet contribution with her lemonade stand

Thursday, July 28th, 2016

Springfield 8-year-old Nora Miller wowed us with her love for the Brentwood Branch Library. She’s missing her “home” library so much while it’s closed for renovation that she decided to help finish off the capital campaign with a lemoDSCN0058nade stand and bake sale on Wednesday, July 27, at the curb of her Rountree neighborhood home. She rallied her family and neighbors, who contributed goodies and bought some, too. Nora even provided drive-up curb service! When we told her she’ll get to return to her favorite library in December, she beamed. “That’s my birthday month, so that will be a great present!” Her present to us when all the goods were consumed: $165. Thank you, Nora, and everyone who helped!

Those Iconic Blue Tiles

Monday, July 18th, 2016

Wondering what happened to Brentwood Branch’s iconic blue sunburst tiles when the renovation began? You’ll see them again. The craftsmen at Rosales Masonry were able to safely remove about 150 of the tiles from the west side of the building, where they were installed when the library was built in 1971. BWD_Blue Tile (Similar tiles added in the 1994 expansion did not fare well in removal.) Brentwood’s neighbor, the Carpet Shoppe, will clean and store the blue tiles during the renovation. When the library reopens this winter, you’ll be able to enjoy them again, this time inside. They will form an artistic backsplash for the new coffee kiosk just inside the entrance.
