It’s going to be the Schweitzer Brentwood Branch!

When the renovated Brentwood Branch reopens later in 2016, it will bear a new name: The Schweitzer Brentwood Branch Library, in honor of a major donor and longtime Springfield resident, Jewell Schweitzer. Thank you, Jewell!

Schweitzer, a longtime Brentwood Library supporter and community philanthropist, donated $1.2 million to the renovation campaign since it began three years ago.

The name change was unveiled at a ReNew Brentwood Campaign fundraiser, Hard Hats & Highballs, on Saturday, April 23, at the branch, 2214 Brentwood Blvd. The library closed April 16 for renovation and is expected to reopen in six to nine months.

Library Foundation Director Valerie Richardson, in announcing the name change, revealed that Schweitzer was the anonymous donor of more than $770,422 in December 2013 as the campaign got underway. Her combined gifts of $1.2 million marked the largest amount given by a single campaign donor. About $65,000 remains to be raised for the $2.5 million project.

“I can’t wait until the renovation is finished,” Schweitzer said Saturday night at the fundraiser.
